I don't need help carrying my groceries

Sometimes profiling can be a good thing. For example, when I check out at Safeway with my bags of groceries, go ahead and assume that I can handle the bags myself. "Do you need help out today?" Do I look like I need help out? How weak and pathetic do I look to you, bagger?

In fact sir, I do not need help carrying the grocery bags. Not only do I have the strength to carry them myself, but your store provides carts with freaking wheels on them to aid me in my journey. This is a question for old ladies, people with certain handicaps, children who are shopping alone for some reason, but not me. I don't care how many times I've been compared to these other people.

If old ladies are turning down your offer of help half the time, assume the rest of us don't need it either. People don't always have to be treated equally.

Every time I walk out of Safeway, I'm thinking the same thing. What the hell is wrong with these people? I imagine it has something to do with employee laziness. You know, if they're not forced to ask everyone they won't ask anyone. Am I right?

And say you let them carry the groceries to your car: Do you have to tip them?

Both of you make good points. I kind of assumed it was so old people wouldn't feel like they were being singled out. They think asking everyone is better than only saying to the old lady, "Ma'am, would you like me to carry that gallon of milk so it doesn't crush your frail body?"

I do think a small tip is in order because they will load it into your car I think. If they just pushed the cart to the car and walked away I'd say no.
